OK Brothers,
This week's Quonset Hut will feature strong words from Paul:
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (1 Cor 9:24-27).
Here's some questions to consider:
1) To what does Paul's analogy to a "race" apply?
2) What is the "prize"?
3) If the wreath won in a footrace is perishable, what prize is "imperishable"?
4) In today's culture, do we think of athletes as exercising "self-control in all things"?
5) What images arise from Paul's invocation of aimless running and a boxer beating the air?
6) From what is Paul disqualified if he fails to discipline his body after preaching to others?
